How To Find Historical & Archived Escambia County Marital Records
The digitized Florida marriage record archives are also a great spot to find marriages that happened before 1996. This includes Marriage Index 1901 through 1918 (PDF) and Marriage Index 1821 through 1900 (PDF), which are all available on microfiche.4
View these pages and discover detailed lists of names of parties of those legally recognized unions within their specified timelines. Searchers may also view historical records of the Marriage Books at the Escambia County Clerk’s Office for any marriages between 1822 and 1999 during office hours, 8 am to 5 pm.5
Interestingly, these pages don’t just contain legal marriages but common law marriages and civil unions. Common law marriages and civil unions refer to informal partnership types such as cohabiting couples. They are not legally valid or recognized in Escambia County.
Florida law states that these kinds of unions have yet to be recognized since January 1, 1968.6
The state abolished the ability to establish new common-law marriages after that date. However, common law marriages entered before that date are still considered valid and will be found in the archives; the Escambia County marriage documents after January 1, 1968, will not contain details on such unions.
That said, Florida now recognizes same-sex marriages conducted from 2015 to date.7 For more information on specific laws and statutes governing these partnerships in Florida, refer to Florida Statutes, Chapter 741 – Marriage.
Besides using official records, interested persons may also explore other sources like delving into old newspapers, church archives, historical societies, and libraries. Local older newspapers often publish wedding announcements and often include details about the couple’s families, ceremony and future plans.
Church archives may hold marriage certificates, wedding bands, and even photos of the actual ceremony. Libraries and historical societies usually have extensive collections of historical materials like family bibles, licenses, and many more.
How To Search for Florida Marriage Records Beyond Escambia County
Sometimes, requesters may not find any marriage records for a particular person in Escambia County; in such instances, the couple may have married in a different county. Hence, the Escambia County custodians cannot assist.
Instead, searchers may use the Bureau of Vital Statistics under the Florida Department of Health to find marriage records (alongside other public data).8 This requires filling out the DH261 Application for Marriage Certificate, which can be presented in person or mailed.9
For walk-ins, inquirers may come along with the completed document during office hours (8.00 am to 4.30 pm) at:
Florida Department of Health

Jacksonville, FL 32202

Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics

The searcher will enclose a non-refundable $5.00 search fee for one calendar year and one certified copy. Additional copies require $4 extra. If the requester has yet to learn the exact year, they will pay a $2 search fee per calendar year (until a maximum of $50).
On average, it takes an estimated time of 3 to 5 business days to process the records (excluding shipping time).
When interested persons need to find the marriage certificates quickly, they can opt for a rush order. The Escambia County office will make such orders a priority for an extra $10. The Escambia county clerk’s offices have already set up rush order routes through Standard U.S. Postal delivery.
However, it’s also possible to provide a special prepaid delivery envelope. The individuals must also mark the outside of their mailed request “RUSH.” All fees should be made via check or money order and not cash.
If the application forms don’t work, curious parties may also submit a request in writing by including the following information:
- Details about the individuals named on the certificate:
The full legal name of the spouses before the first marriage
Dates of birth for both spouses
Marriage date
Place of marriage (city/county)
The county that issued the marriage license
- Details about the requester:
Full name
Mailing address
Phone number
Signature of requester
Relationship to the requester to the persons on the marriage certificate.
Additionally, the Florida Department of Health provides VitalChek online search options or via phone call to VitalChek at +1-877-550-7330. VitalChek is a trusted third-party vendor authorized by the government to order marriage certificates online alongside other documents. This requires a search fee of $5.00 plus a $10.00 rush fee.
In cases where the exact year of the marriage records is unknown, the search fee becomes $50. UPS shipping may require an additional cost – alongside a VitalChek processing fee – to verify the searcher’s identity. Searchers may also use regular mail as a shipping method, which carries no additional cost.
